Short-Handed Portugal FC Score Decisive Victory

2008-07-14

Portugal FC scored an impressive 4-0 victory over the St. Catharines Wolves despite being down to nine men.

In the world of soccer, there is not a more demoralizing and crippling blow then receiving a red card. Receiving two red cards for a team and still being victorious is almost unheard of, yet that is exactly what Portugal FC did on Friday night at Lamport Stadium. Portugal FC extended their home unbeaten streak this season by beating the St. Catharines Wolves 4-0 despite playing most of the game with 10 men and finishing with nine.

After a mild start to the game it was Helio Pereira that opened the scoring in the 31st minute. However, this momentum was not witheld by the Portuguese as in the 41st minute Selmir Sehic was shown a red car for unsportsmanlike conduct. This put the pressure squarely on the Portugal defense as the game entered halftime as questions were raised whether they would be able to hang on despite being down a man.

In the second half, it was Portugal FC that continued the pressure and not the Wolves. Wigor Gomes scored in the 46th minutes after racing past the St. Catharines defense and beating Claudio Perri who was left out to dry on the play. In the 64th minute Pereira seemed to ice the game by scoring his second and giving Portugal a dominating 3-0 lead. Kevin McIntosh rounded out the scoring in the 73rd minute as the Portuguese continued to score goal despite being down a man. In the 88th minue Sebastian Busto was shown the red card for a harsh foul sending hte Portuguese down to nine men, but it was far to late for the Wolves to achieve anything. Busto and Sehic will be suspended for the next Portuguese game.

Portugal now sits at 4-3-2 still in fourth place in the International Division. Their next game is at home at Lamport Stadium on Friday night as they take on the CSL-leading Trois Rivieres Attak. Game time is 8:00pm. For tickets call 905-564-4660 or contact tickets@portugalfc.ca
