Portugal FC Come up Short in Canada Day Game2008-07-02![]() Portugal FC come up short against the 1st place Italia Shooters, 4-1. July 1, 2008 - On Tuesday afternoon, Portugal FC visited the Italia Shooters at Maple Stadium for a holiday matinee. Going into the fixture, Portugal FC were in a third place tie with the Serbian White Eagles, while the Italia Shooters entered the game in first place in the International Division with 16 points, and with a win could take over the overall CSL lead.
Italia Shooters (6-2-1) 4 Portugal FC (3-2-2) 1 The Shooters were able to defend their home field successfully against Portugal FC, and able to take over top position in the league with a 4-1 victory over Portugal FC. The Shooters opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Frank Jonke put one past the Portuguese keeper. 14 minutes later, Jonke was at it again giving the Shooters a 2-0 lead over Portugal FC. Portugal FC were able to cut the lead in half prior to half time when Emerson Fiti scored his second goal in as many games on a free kick from 25 yards out. The goal by Fiti, made the score 2-1 as the game approached halftime. The score remained the same for the majority of the second half until the Shooters were able to once again go up by two goals thanks to Jason De Thomasis in the 75th minute. The third goal seemed to give the Shooters the insurance they needed and De Thomasis rounded out the scoring in injury stoppage time by adding his second goal of the game, making the final 4-1. Portugal FC still sit in a third place tie with the Serbian White Eagles and head on the road this Friday night as they head to the Hershey Center to take on Toronto Croatia who currently sit in second place in the International Division. Toronto Croatia enters the game riding a seven game unbeaten streak after losing their opening game. Like Portugal FC, Toronto Croatia is unbeaten at home this season . Game time is scheduled for 8:00pm. Portugal FC's next home game is Friday July 11th when they will host the St. Catharines Wolves.
