Portugal FC battle to draw Toronto Croatia

2008-06-21

Portugal FC and Toronto Croatia battled to a 1-1 draw at Lamport Stadium on Friday night.

Friday June 20, 2008 - With second place on the line in the International Division on Friday night at Lamport Stadium, Portugal FC battled Toronto Croatia to a 1-1 draw. Portugal had come into the game riding a 3 game winning streak and although they were unable to continue their winning streak, the result extended their unbeaten streak to four games and also kept their home schedule clean without a loss thus far.

The game started off strategically, with both teams trying to feel each other out playing the long ball down the field. Defensively both teams were strong in the first half not allowing any real scoring chances.

Portugal FC was finally able to open the scoring in the 61st minute as Samuel Afriyie was able to get one past the Croatian keeper making the score 1-0. Minutes later Toronto Croatia seemed to tie the game on a beautiful header off a set piece, however the play was ruled to be offside and thus the scored remained 1-0. Shortly after that goal was disallowed, Toronto Croatia was able to draw level with Portugal FC on a goal by Hugo Herrera in the 66th minute. The teams both solidified their defense in the final moments and the score remained 1-1 as the final whistle was blown.

Portugal FC now has a record which stands at 3-1-1 and currently sit in 3rd place in the International Division with 10 points. The next game for Portugal FC is against Serbian White Eagles on Friday June 27, 2008 at 8:30pm at Lamport Stadium, where they will look to extended their unbeaten streak to five games.
